Being Square in a Round World

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of the darkness into the wonderful light. – 1Peter 2:9

There are so many pressures to fit in to what the world defines as acceptable. I often wonder why so many times I leave a gathering and feel like, “Man, I did not fit in with that group or that situation.” We were not made to “fit in” every friend circle. We were made to be different and stand apart from the norm. That may seem lonely sometimes because being different requires standing alone. One thing is for sure, you are not alone in your feelings. So many women feel this way especially when trying to find their own sister circle without compromising their morals or beliefs (Proverbs 13:20). There are several things that you can do in those times when those feelings of inadequacy or loneliness creep in. You can encourage yourself with the Word of God reminding yourself that you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Remind yourself that you were created for greater. Pray and ask God to surround you with women who are not afraid to be different because they love the Lord and they allow that love to reflect in the way they live (Proverbs 18:24 and 1 Corinthians 15:33) . In times that we feel out of place or alone, we should get in the presence of God and seek His direction as He molds and shapes us into the women He created us to be (Ephesians 2:10).

How do you handle those moments when you realize certain things or even certain people are not right for you?

  1. Thanks so much for sharing these thoughts with us, Pamela, and reminding us of God’s Word on the matter! God did not create us to be chameleons that shift and change to fit in with our surroundings… He created us to be salt and light! We are supposed to stand out and be different, because we reflect the radiance of the Son. In those times that I feel tempted to go with the flow or to hide my light in order to fit in, I am reminded of Luke 12:8 which says, “And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.” I am also encouraged by I Peter 4:14 which says, “If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.”

  2. Wow! This article is awesome and I can completely relate. Twenty twenty-one has really been a difficult year. We are a royal priesthood, a holy nation called out of darkness into his marvelous light. I would rather stand alone for God, than to surround myself with friends. The word is a lamp to our feet and a light unto our paths. God will place godly woman in your life to encourage you,and pray for you. I’m so grateful that I am square in a round world. Thanks for sharing Pam ????????

  3. Thank you so much for sharing this. I used to feel bad about not fitting in with certain groups anymore. But I didn’t fit in anymore because God was changing my heart and me in the process. That doesn’t mean I did not still love the people in those groups, but I could no longer take part in certain things anymore ( 2 Corinthians 5:17). We must remember our identity is in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:20).

This is great. Thank you so much for sharing. I’ve been there before. Knowing who you are in Christ is key. You no longer desire to fit in but are comfortable in who Christ created you to be Psalm (100:3, Psalm 139:14).
